Power distribution in global politics has historically shifted between states. In a Unipolar world, one state has a hegemony, or total power in the system. A bipolar system refers to power shared between two major powers. In a multipolar world, there may be multiple centres of power. Power distribution is also related to power diffusion, often seen in today's world, as exemplified by political scientist Joseph Nye, who argues that the growing power of non-state actors has the ability to destabilize traditional ideas of power distribution.
