Angela is a Frenchwoman. She recently broke her arm. Insurance covered the cost of a helper. This helper, a woman from Africa, came one day a week, on Friday.

One Friday when the helper came in, they started making the bed. With a broken arm, everything was very difficult for Angela. She had her whole right arm in a cast, but she tried to help make the bed. As she was struggling along, she asked this woman, “Do you believe in God?” And the woman said, “Oh, yes.” Angela said, “Well, so do I.”

Common ground is good. And it’s not very common in some of the European countries to find someone who believes in God. They kind of got over religion, to the extent that they have, because of the religious wars in Europe. There was so much bloodshed. So now it’s more “Let’s take it easy on each other.” I think in some of the northern or Scandinavian countries, the number of atheists is in the 90th percentile. Very high.

So when Angela said she believed in God too, the woman from Africa knew that she was talking with a kindred spirit. Then the African asked, “What church?” “Eckankar.”  "What is that?” Angela said, “Do you know 'HU'? HU-U-U-U.” The woman stopped working and almost cried. She said she watched Benin TV by satellite. She had seen ECKists on a program and wondered where to find such people in France. Apparently there had been all kinds of coincidences that had brought her to Angela’s home to help.

Angela gave her the information on when the ECKists were meeting, and she was invited to come to a HU Song, a HU Chant.

Of course we wonder sometimes when something untoward happens to us. We say, “Now, why did that happen?” Angela did too. She said, “Past karma, no doubt. But maybe it was also to meet all these wonderful people that I’ve met since I broke my arm. Especially this woman from Africa.”
