Box jellyfish. The most venomous
Box jellyfish. The most venomous creatures in the ocean. They may not look dangerous, but contact with its tentacles that covered with thousands of stinging cells can cause paralysis, cardiac arrest, and death within minutes.
Adult box jellyfish can grow up to 20cm (8in) and the tentacles can grow up to 3m (10ft). Unlike most jellyfish, box jellyfish can swim well enough to control the direction they're heading. They have complex eyes grouped in clusters of six on the four sides of their bell which help them to see, navigate and avoid obstacles. It also respond to light.
Box jellyfish feed on fish and shrimp, they don't go after humans. They are able to detect these different levels of contrast. However, the blurry eyed of box jellyfish can't see white or pale objects and therefore more likely to accidentally "bump" into humans. In the murky water, the body of the light skin is hard to notice but the dark skinned body is much easier to see. For box jellyfish, this does not appear to be prey and they changes course. If you've been stung, seek medical attention immediately and rinse the area with vinegar to relieve the pain. So, make sure you always wear a protective suit before you swim during jellyfish season.
