At first glance, this could pass as a scene from one of Hollywood''s latest blockbusters. But this escape is no fiction: in the car, a North Korean soldier is speeding towards the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ. In this incident which took place on November 13th, the soldier pulls off a daring desertion to South Korea. North Korean soldiers scramble to chase the man, firing several shots at him.Most soldiers stop short of crossing the border, but one man enters the DMZ before finally turning back. The United Nations Command in South Korea is accusing North Korea of breaching the armistice deal.4. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC AFFAIRS DIRECTOR OF U.N. COMMAND (UNC), CHAD G. CARROLL, SAYING: "The key findings of the special investigation team are that the KPA (North Korean People''s Army) violated the armistice agreement by one; firing weapons across the MDL (Military Demarcation Line), and two; by actually crossing the MDL temporarily."Suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the soldier collapses once in South Korea. Some southern soldiers are then seen dragging him to safety.Since then the soldier has been hospitalized and has undergone surgery in a South Korean hospital. Surgeons discovered several parasites, including a 27-centimeter-long worm inside his stomach.7. (SOUNDBITE) (Korean) SURGEON IN CHARGE OF DEFECTED NORTH KOREAN SOLDIER''S SURGERY AT AJOU UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, LEE COOK-JONG, SAYING: "There are good parasiticides these days, so the parasites have been dealt with as the drugs were transfused immediately. But there is the issue of viruses, and these will become chronic problems. As he stays in South Korea he''ll be getting the necessary treatments and he should be fine." These findings have been widely commented in South Korea, with many believing it shows just how bad malnutrition has gotten in the north.
