The Human Genome Project was initiated in the early 1990s to determine the DNA sequence of the entire human genome..
Essentially the genome is the entire genetic material of that organism. Each body cell has a copy of our entire genome.
In its early days, the publicly funded project met with a lot of skepticism.
But over the years, it not only ushered in a new era in medicine, but also triggered significant advances in the types of technology used to sequence DNA.
Now, scientists are taking the step further... Their aim is to sequence the DNA of every known animal, plant and fungus in the world.
This international mission is called the Earth BioGenome Project
