0:00 - Intro
Review of examples of how poor default Illustrator dashed lines can be.

0:25 - Locating Stroke Settings
Access to the stroke settings is required to make a dashed line. These settings are available from many places including the Stroke panel, the Properties panel and the Control panel running across the top of Illustrator.

1:06 - Make and Edit a Dashed Line
With a path active, activate the Dashed Line option from the stroke settings. A dashed line will be drawn using the value entered in the Dash field. In the absence of a defined value for the gap, a gap will be created that is equal in length to the dash.

2:17 - Fixing Broken Dashed Lines
Within the Dashed Line properties are two buttons that are a toggle. The first button, which is the default, preserves the exact lengths for the dash and gap. This explains why default dashed lines look poor at end points and corners. The second button gives a far more pleasing visual appearance as it allows Illustrator to adjust dash lengths and aligns them to corners and path ends.

3:25 - Activating Option When Greyed Out
If the alternate dashed line button is greyed out, the Align Stroke option needs to be changed from either Inside or Outside to Centre.

4:05 - Another Example
Creating a nicely spaced dashed line around a circle.

4:26 - Adjusting Dashed Line After Alignment
Sometimes, having created excellent dashed line alignment at corners, the dashed lines along a shapes edges can look odd. In such a situation adjust the dash and/or gap values until a pleasing result is achieved.
