Before you call me a schill for Apeel (which I'm not) I want you to think hard about how produce is packaged for selling in stores.
Produce such as apples must be washed. This takes the natural wax off the apples. Without it, the apples would rot, so Shellac (from the Asian Luc Beetle) or Carnuaba Wax (from a palm tree in Brazil). Neither is carbon footprint friendly. The new Apeel is made from seed oil. How is that worse than beetle wax? Mmmmm....bug wax! #notvegan
But worse is the use of plastic on everything. Go to Trader Joe's and notice how much of it is wrapped or encased in single use plastic. Walk Costco and look at how much is in plastic boxes! Plastic keeps produce fresh far longer. But oh that footprint 👣
We have to talk more about how much produce is wasted due to rot, but also our desire to eat globally. We want strawberries out of season, and Japan wants Washington State apples in December!
So, maybe Apeel isn't the nightmare you want it to be. Maybe it'll reduce a ton of that plastic 🤔 That alone has me intrigued.
But as long as you buy at Costco, Target, Walmart, Trader Joe's and similar, you can't whine about Apeel....as you toss all that plastic!!
