Hi there! I am Joseph. I have been an immigrant, or expat, living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now. Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food! In this episode we welcome you to join us in early Spring as we visit and give you a virtual tour of one of our favourite mountain towns / cities. Today we visit the university town of Covilha in central Portugal. Mariana, Chloe and I begin by introducing ourselves on a beautiful cobbled street, underneath the mountainside, with shops all around us and we explain a little bit about this wonderful town. We take a short walk down the street, Mariana marches ahead looking in all of the shops. Whilst I have to admit that shopping is very far from being my sort of thing, it is nice to get out and stretch our legs in a different surrounding every once in a while. After that Mariana and I took a short walk around the village to begin the day. We pointed out the camara municipal, or town hall building, it is very large compared to our one in Fundao, the theatre stands next door and there is a large bank and a church opposite. We stood by the statue of Pero da Covilha for a little while, spoke about him and then decided we would go for a drink, so we sat on a patio, did a spot of people watching and had an ice cold beer. Mariana had a couple of pastel de natas, which are a famous pastry in Portugal, originating in Lisboa. Once rehydrated we took a walk further down the street, crossed the road and entered a beautiful artesenal shop, where we bought a couple of little items, a wheel of my favourite regional cheese, queijo da ovelha amenteigado being one of them! We then walked around the swan park to stretch our legs somewhat for a bit before heading home. Once back on our own farm I walked up to the sheep barn, passing a couple of puddle ducks foraging around in the leaf litter of the main cherry orchard. It is a perfect day to be a duck on the farm with all this rain we have been getting. Up at the sheep barn we took a peak at the squab in his nest, the first time pigeon parents are doing really well in caring for him. The other egg unfortunately did not hatch however. I call our to our sheep and try to coax them down to the barn for night time, for some reason they are more than happy frolicking around in the rain and mud and not too fussed about getting wet. They soon make their way down to the barn with a little calling and whistling, then most of the girls are straight inside to tuck into the fresh hay in the manger, there are a couple of stragglers though. They are the usual suspects, the same sheep that every night take a long time to get into bed, Carrie, our bottle fed ewe lamb from last summer, Sweetie and Florence. My father comes up to join me, as he does every night, we herd the girls into their barn and bid them sweet dreams. After this I take a walk back to the farm house for the evening and show you all the waterfalls in our spring fed streams, now crashing and full with water after the heavy rains. Thank you all so very much for watching, I wish you all a pleasant week and I look forward to seeing you again next week!
