On May 26th, 2023, an officer pulled over a vehicle after witnessing an improper lane change. Upon performing a traffic stop of the vehicle, the officer began speaking with the female driver and male passenger when he noticed a seatbelt violation. Upon further questioning the passenger on his seatbelt, he became un-cooperative with the officer. The passenger refused to provide his ID or information, as the officer warned him he would be arrested if he continued refusing to identify himself.
The situation escalated as the passenger continued to argue with the officer over his seatbelt and refused to answer questions. A sergeant arrived at the scene to assist the officer with his investigation as they asked the suspect to exit the vehicle. The suspect repeatedly refused to exit the vehicle, eventually complying when officers warned him he would be tased if he did not exit the vehicle. The suspect eventually complied and was placed in handcuffs before being taken to a patrol vehicle.
While searching the vehicle, an officer located the suspect’s ID and spoke with the female driver, who told officers she was “giving him a ride” to her friend's house and did not know the suspect well. Officers let the female driver go from the scene with a written warning. The suspect was read his Miranda Rights while continuing to argue about the seatbelt violation before being taken to jail. The suspect was charged with Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Official Business.
