This is the best way to improve the appearance of rusty chrome plated steel parts without harmful chemicals or re-plating, and least mess.
This method will not repair chrome plating that has peeled off or blistered due to heavy corrosion. It will clean up fairly heavily pitted chrome parts. This is not a method for a concours restoration where only new chrome plating will provide perfection. It will make old parts look better and help protect them from further degradation.
I have used steel wool, aluminum foil, citric acid baths, oxalic acid baths and vinegar baths. All of these will work, but this is the cleanest and easiest method in my opinion. I still use citric acid baths for larger parts like frames or handlebars.
Products used:
sealable plastic tub
Dawn dish soap
nylon bristle brushes
Evapo-Rust
Quick-Glo
Mothers Chrome Polish
Superlube grease
paper towels
shop towels
microfiber towels
used golf balls (optional to reduce volume of rust remover)
