First impressions on the 2017
First impressions on the 2017 Husqvarna TE300 and KTM 300EXC after a brief test ride on the TX300 model. As you know the TE300 is just the high end version of the 300EXC and both have a raft of changes that have dramatically changed the bikes. We talk about the 2017 KTM 300EXC and Husqvarna TE300 three minutes into this vid.
One of the things we love about cross training is challenging ourselves, but because we are just feeble minded gumbies we do this at a very measured pace. We will look at a new obstacle for months, and debate how we tackle it. We think about it, then decide to leave it for a few months. But eventually we get enough courage and will ride over that small log and think what were we worried about? There is a steep bank we have all looked at for the past two years, but no one has been game to tackle it... until today. Scotty has just had our new prosthetics gonads surgically inserted and is ready to try it on his brand new KTM 200EXC. He has a few practice runs to get used to the steepness. Not quite enough drive and momentum to make it. More power this time but still not quite enough. The camera doesn't show just how intimidating this is. For two years I've looked at this and thought no way, I'm not ready yet.

Quite a few guys have asked recently about my thoughts on the 2017 KTM and Husqvarna two strokes, especially the TE300 and 300EXC. I did get a brief ride on a new Husky TX300 in Canada (not enough for a proper review) and I must say I was impressed. While I did like my old KTM 250EXC in so many ways, I had constant problems with the terribly designed starter motor. After taking it apart for the tenth time in six months I got finally fixed it but decided to make the move to Beta.
Well, they have finally decided to put a proper starter motor in the TE300 and 300EXC, but KTM and Husqvarna have gone much further. The things I particularly liked? The air forks were incredible on this TX300 so hopefully they'll wind up on the TE300 next year. The Husqvarna rode over rocks as if they weren't there. The owner of this TE300 races a lot and said it's the best suspension he's ever had. I can see why. That low slung exhaust has finally been raised out of the way like other European two strokes. The previous sixth gear on the TE300 and 300EXC was barely different to fifth but the new ratios work much better. The new KTM and Husqvarna engine is brilliant and just as smooth and linear as the Betas. And they are even lighter now, around the same as a Beta Xtrainer.
Would this make me swing over to a KTM or Husqvarna? Well either the TE300 or 300EXC would be very tempting. To date, my dodgy gumby opinion has been that KTM and Husqvarnas probably have the edge for the aggressive or very talented rider, while the very user-friendly nature of the Beta probably suits the everyday dirt rider a tad better. But my first impressions on riding riding this new Husqvarna TE300 suggest the reworked design, lighter weight and new engine mean it is probably at least equal to Beta for the everyday gumby as well.
Potential drawbacks? The price. In Australia the Husqvarna TE300 is almost $3000 more than the Betas. While the air forks work beautifully, only time will tell how reliable they are in the long term and if they are then used on the TE300 and 300EXC. And as with any major overhaul, we can't be sure what issues might arise, such as the recent recall on the Brembo brake issue for the 2017 KTM and Husqvarna models.
Anyway, as I've said before we are spoilt for choice nowadays, and most of us will never test any of these bikes to their limits. But I'm certainly glad to see KTM and Husqvarna address the issues of their old design and come out with a very impressive range including the TE300 and 300EXC.
Just to finish off... I highly recommend watching Toni Bou if you want to feel really bad about your riding skills, get depressed and sell your bike. We need to stop this guy posting videos, whatever it takes.
