Shabbat Candles are found in just about every Jewish home, regardless of the level of religious observance. Even in times of religious persecution and hiding; Jewish women would risk their lives to secretly light candles to usher in Sabbath. Which makes it all the more surprising to learn that the mitzvah to light candles is not a Torah commandment. In fact, the earliest rabbinic textual sources dealing with the lighting of the Shabbat candles is the Mishnah  which dates to about 200 CE. That is not to say that these texts are the origin of the mitzvah.  Come journey through Jewish history and find out what we know outside about this amazing mitzvah.
