Does gradual spiritual growth or instantaneous transformation lead to enlightenment? Neither, according to Advaita Vedanta: it's a non-linear process. Q&A with Swamiji #13.

Liberation or enlightenment (moksha) is the discovery of your true nature as sat chit ananda, limitless, eternal conscious existence, often referred to as the true self, atma, or inner divinity. According to the rishis, the sages of ancient India, your true nature is already divine, but unrecognized as such due to ignorance (ajnana). The removal of that ignorance by atma jnana, self-knowledge, is instantaneous. But much time might be required before and after gaining that knowledge, first to become fully prepared to gain that knowledge (adhikaritva, preparedness for spiritual growth) and then afterwards to assimilate that knowledge and become fully established in it (nishtha) through the practice of nididhyasana, non-dual vedantic contemplation.

Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: https://www.arshabodha.org/
