We receive hundreds of extraordinary watches at Bob’s Watches HQ each month, many of which would be considered grail watches or particularly rare.  In this edition of Watch Talk, the team takes advantage of the opportunity to share some of the most collection-worthy timepieces from CEO and founder Paul Altier’s vault with our followers.

What is a grail watch?

While the answer to this question is subjective, most watch enthusiasts can agree that grail watches are often rare, expensive, and even downright unobtainable.  Conversely, grail watches can also be an affordable timepiece that one has always wanted to buy and might not necessarily be hard to find.  It all depends on the individual.

The Team’s Grail Watches:

Emily: Gold Rolex King Midas

Ripley: Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655, Milsub, and ref. 5514 Comex Submariner

Brandon: Original Big Crown Rolex Submariner

CEO Paul Altieri’s Personal Grail Watches:

Rolex Paul Newman Daytona ref 6241 circa 1969

It’s not very often that watch enthusiasts get the chance to examine the fabled Rolex Daytona ref 6241 – aka “Paul Newman” – in the metal, and that’s precisely what we have here.

Examples like the beloved actor and accomplished racecar driver wore feature what many in the industry call an “exotic dial” decorated with chronograph registers with art deco-style Arabic numerals and square-tipped hash marks.

Initially, these watches were very undesirable and often sat on the shelves at authorized dealers.  Today, the Paul Newman Daytona trades hands for astronomical amounts and even holds the title of the most expensive Rolex ever sold at auction.

The example we had the opportunity to examine for this edition of Watch Talk also features push-down chronograph pushers, a black acrylic Tachymeter bezel, and the celebrated hand-wound caliber 722 based on a Valjoux chronograph movement.

Stainless Steel time and date Patek Philippe ref. 3700 circa 1979

The Patek Philippe/Gerald Genta masterpiece – the Nautilus – is one of the most iconic luxury watches in existence, and it began its road to horology infamy in 1976 via ref. 3700.  We have a lovely example of the inaugural reference on hand for this edition of Watch Talk.

Many view the Nautilus as Patek Philippe’s first foray into the stainless steel luxury sports watch realm. Although it beats to the sound of its own drum among other chunky, rotatable bezel sports watches with a sleek silhouette and undeniably elegant design codes.

The case is surrounded by a rounded octagonal bezel developed to resemble a ship’s porthole.  The Nautilus is also often distinguished by a remarkable horizontally-embossed dial.

Rolex GMT Master ref. 6542 “Bakelite” circa 1959

Rolex unveiled the GMT Master in the 1950s via ref. 6542 – aka “Rolex Pussy Galore.” The very first examples of the beloved pilot’s watch were outfitted with a bakelite bezel with Radium numerals, which was prone to cracking.  Ever the perfectionists, Rolex quickly replaced the material with aluminum on this watch from 1956 and on.

It’s rare to find examples with the original Bakelite bezel, which is exactly what the team has here.

Features include the iconic red and blue “Pepsi” bezel, an extra centrally mounted hand for dual timekeeping, and a self-winding movement with a date mechanism.

This Rolex has all the makings of a desirable grail watch: it was the first of the series, it’s incredibly rare and was only produced for a few short years in the 1950s, and it has all of its original components despite Rolex recalling the bezel.

A truly magnificent grail watch.
