Irayimman Thampi
With the sweet lullaby Omana Thingal Kidavo… Irayimman Thampi conquered the hearts of one and all. Considering his literary contributions, we are amazed to find that he was not only a song writer but an eminent poet and writer of number of Attakatha(Kathakali play) as well.
Irayimman Thampi was born in the Malayalam month of Thulam in 1958 ME Kottakkakom Kizhake Madom. His mother was Parvathy Pillai Thankachi who was close to the Travancore royal family. His father was Kerala Varma Thamban of Cherthala Naduvil Kovilakam and was also known as Sastri Thamban.
Irayimman Thampi's original name was Ravi Varma Thampi. His father was his first guru. Later, he received higher studies from the noted scholar, Moothattu Sankaran Ilayathu. At a young age, he could grasp poetry, drama and grammar. Subsequently, he became an expert in Sanskrit literature, Vedantam, Music. About Irayimman Thampi who adorned the court of Swathi Thirunal, Ulloor commented in Kerala Literary history: "If there is anyone who could be referred to as a great poet that would be Asthanakavi Irayimman Thampi".
Irayimman Thampi proved his literary prowess in Attakatha, Sanskrit keerthans, Malayalam songs, Ujaal paattukal, Otta slokas and lullabies. His important works include Uttara Swayamvaram, Keechakavadham, Dakshayagam. Being close to the royal family, some of the themes chosen were based on memorable moments he had with the family. Ranging from the devotional Karuna Cheyvan entu Thamasame Krishna... to the erotic Prananathan enikku nalkiya paramananda rasatha… his works is enshrined in the Malayali hearts, even to this day.
Irayimman Thampi was married to Kalli Pillai Thankachi. Historical records say that the couple had three daughters. Irayimman Thampi who claims the second position next to Swathi Tirunal in writing ‘Kerala song’ died in the Malayalam month of Karkidakom in 1031 ME at the age of 73.
