Over 400 swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) trees were planted at the 9/11 memorial in New York City. The trees are cared for by a team of arborists at the Bartlett Tree Expert company, and are planted all around the two reflection pools where the towers used to stand.

Q. bicolor is a great tree for urban settings because it is tolerant of many stressors, and is a terrific tree for wildlife. It provides acorns, and its leaves are food for over 500 butterfly and moth species.

As the trees continue to grow, the goal is for them to form a continuous canopy over almost the entire space. It is a striking urban forest that significantly contributes to the memorial space. A lone callery pear (Pyrus calleryana), known as the Survivor Tree, is planted amongst the oaks, and I'll have a video about that coming soon.
