🚨 Climate change is hitting forcibly displaced communities hard.

Extreme weather events like the recent floods in Brazil have displaced over half a million people, including many refugees.

UNHCR is on the ground, providing emergency shelter and support, but the needs are growing. The frequency, intensity and magnitude of these climate disasters are a warning signal to the world that cannot be ignored.

UN Refugee Agency sounds the alarm on climate change pounding refugee communities (Andrew Harper Climate Palais Briefing)

CLIP: Andrew Harper, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency:
Displacement is occurring at an alarming rate—one person per second due to conflict and climate change disasters.

This means that during this one-hour panel, 3,600 people will be displaced.

I have just returned from Brazil, where we are witnessing the latest impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations.

As I prepared for this briefing, more information came in about the situations in East Africa, Bangladesh, and South Asia. These crises are occurring almost everywhere.

I want to emphasize that while climate change affects every part of the world, it disproportionately impacts those who are most vulnerable—those who often lack the capacity, resources, and assets to resist these changes.

When records are broken continuously, no existing scenarios can fully anticipate future developments.

This presents a significant challenge for UNHCR, as we have millions of people living on the fringes of society, heavily reliant on external support.

UNHCR's involvement in addressing worsening climate challenges is becoming increasingly crucial.

Another critical aspect to note is the need for support from host communities—whether in Brazil, Bangladesh, Kenya, or Chad—as they are also affected.

Brazil is one example, but similar scenarios are unfolding in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and East Africa.

UNHCR has also established a Climate Resilience Fund, seeking $100 million to support shelter, water, and community resilience.
