At the request of Mr. de Sartine, Nicolas Le Floch is responsible for carrying out the investigation in complete discretion. Despite the presence of the commissioner in the house, the members of Monsieur de Montault's family die one after the other. Only his daughter-in-law, Hortense de Vartelle, with whom he is secretly in love, miraculously escapes the fate that befell the victims.
