2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review: Is This the One?

Let’s test drive and review the 2024 Nissan Z Nismo! The Z name has always been special. Its lineage began with the Datsun 240Z in the 1960s and '70s. As the years and new Z models went by, the numbers in their names got bigger: Nissan and Datsun, which eventually just became Nissan proper, subsequently introduced cars like the 260Z, 280Z, 280ZX, 300ZX, 350Z, and 370Z, the oldest of which are now high-priced collectibles. Before the new Z debuted in 2021, the outgoing 370Z had been around since 2008. It was nearing its 15-year anniversary! In mid 2020, Nissan unveiled the Z Proto: a concept car previewing the new Z. We all thought the new model of the car would be called the 400Z, because that made sense. When the production version debuted in 2021, it was just as much of a head-turner, and it was called just the Z — no numbers. While a lot of people know Nissan for its modern nameplates like the Altima, Sentra, and Frontier, the new Z joined a long history of famous Nissan nameplates: the GT-R, Fairlady Z, Skyline, and more. The new Z came with 400 horsepower, and the Z Nismo performance spec brings that power figure up to 420 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque from a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 engine. While the regular Z is available in a 9-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission, the Z Nismo comes with just the auto. The Z Nismo’s auto is really good, and its exhaust note is heavenly. The sound is something you can never really shake. The stock power figures are perfect for the street — but I can’t say if they’re perfect for the race track, since I didn’t get to take this car on one — and I’m sure modified versions with a nice tune will pop up soon. But I’d probably lean toward a regular Z. The interior and exterior colors are more customizable, and although I like the Z Nismo’s trapezoidal front grille much better than the regular Z’s giant black box, I’d just do a front-bumper conversion. Long-term, I think I’d just like my color choices and manual transmission better than having an auto on the Z Nismo. Thanks for watching my YouTube channel. Enjoy the drive (and the video)!
