Molding and casting with silicone rubber.  Learn mold making techniques and how to make a human skull mold part 2.  Hard coating the silicone case mold.  How to make a matrix, case, blanket, or also known as a mother mold.  In this second video we cover the sculpting clay around the skull with a Smooth-On product called Plasti-Paste II which is a two component fiber-filled resin that is designed for vertical surface applications like the sides of this mold. This no-odor formulation is an improved version of our original Plasti-Paste formula.  Unlike the original this one can be painted and cures to a harder more rigid product and has better heat resistance.  It only has a pot life of 10 minutes after Part A mixes with Part B  The last case I built for a skull mold was with fiberglass and resin.  I applied layers of resin with a brush and cut strips of glass.  I wanted to share a way that I felt would be easier to deal with.  You can also use brushed on layers of plaster with strips of jute netting.  Just make sure you make it around 3/8" thick or more.  I also went with the PVC stand instead of the wood dowels I fabricated last time to cut down on having to cut, glue, and drill wood.  This mother mold also known as matrix mold, case mold, or blanket mold will be able to rest in any position nicely for doing partial castings and will be easy to handle and work with.  The blacking is called So-Strong color tint and isn't necessary.  I just thought it would be fun to try giving it some color.  You could use the plywood piece as the top lid but I wanted to used the same material as the base.  For release agents I used petroleum jelly and a ease release spray called Mann 200.  I used a heat gun to melt down some of the large streaks in the jelly but its not necessary.  There are several places to purchase fake or realistic looking skulls and often times the more realistic and detailed they are the more they cost.  This can get expensive if your needing 30 or more skulls for a catacomb scene, film shoot or a Halloween yard or home haunt.  A well built skull mold is one way to help keep the overall cost of your project down in the long run.  Although some of the materials to get started will have some cost attached to it like silicone rubber, clay, resins, plaster, or fiberglass for instance, it should pay off in the end.  So if you're a do it yourself type of a person with a little time and patience than this video may help you get some ideas for your future skull mold making project.  This video is the second in a series of videos that will take you through all the steps we took to make the style mold we use all the time to make our Halloween skull props.  We place these skulls all throughout our home and yard haunt and inside our walk through maze and crypt mausoleums.  We created a whole catacomb wall behind our foam crypt coffin prop we had last year.  We cast them with hard plaster and drilled holes and glued 3/8" bolts into the backs to make mounting to the wall easier.    Be sure to check out part one if you missed it.
