Chapters:
00:00 - why and how I switched teams at Microsoft
02:36 - what I do as a technical program manager
09:32 - wrap-up

Switching teams is fairly common at large tech companies like Microsoft, Facebook, Google etc.
Yet, I didn't apply to work on another team at Microsoft, instead I was moved to realign to another team as apart of a department reorganization with Microsoft Azure. I'm still in the same general department, so I didn't move far but I am now working on a different product.

When you switch teams, its likely that your responsibilities can change. If you are a software engineer, I wouldn't worry because for example a software engineer at Microsoft will still be doing software engineering even if they change teams. On the other hand, program managers at Microsoft are a lot more fluid and therefore the job responsibilities of a program manager can vary a lot based on the team.

On my previous team at Microsoft, although I was a program manager, my responsibilities were much closer to that of a software engineer. I spent a majority of my days writing code and reading documentation, with some sprinkles of general program manager work. On my new team, it is almost the complete opposite. My day as a technical program manager at Microsoft now is a lot more fluid. I might try to code in the morning, then have to run a meeting, then have to submit onboarding documents or meet with another team, then have to present a technology roadmap etc. But ultimately this fluidity in program management keeps things interesting (but also busier).

Comment down below your thoughts on switching teams and technical program manager responsibilities!
