TOMTalks tests his Away Carry-On (expandable version) in the American Airlines baggage sizer at the airport to ensure it fits as his carry-on item on his American Airlines flight. This is the smaller version of the popular Away suitcase. This is "The Carry-On" version, but in the expandable version where you can unzip and add extra space if necessary.

I flew on four American Eagle regional jets, and I was never asked to measure this luggage. It fits easily inside the guidelines on the sizer. However, because I was flying on small regional flights that were very fully they asked us to gate check our carry-on luggage at the gate, thus I never actually tried putting it in the overhead compartment. However, the luggage clearly fits within the size limits allowed by American Airlines and the other two major US carriers so you should not have to pay an extra fee to carry it on when the luggage is unexpanded. I should note I did not have this luggage expanded the extra three inches when measuring in the above video. I am not sure I would ever expand the luggage except if I needed extra space coming home from an international trip for example.
