Hey everybody, Ryan here at Etrailer.  Today on our 2023 Volkswagen ID4 we're gonna be showing you how to install the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver.  Before we get into that though, let's take a minute, check this out and make sure it's going to be right for you.  By putting a hitch back here on your ID4, it's really going to open up your opportunities and what you're gonna be able to do.  Whether you're trying to use an accessory like a bike rack or a cargo carrier or even pull a small trailer around, this one is definitely gonna get the job done.  And one of the first things that I noticed about it is the appearance.

These ID4s have some sharp lines and being electric, I wouldn't want some big rugged hitch on the back of it.  And with this one you're gonna get a clean look to it.  Essentially, you're just gonna be able to see the receiver tube opening and not have to deal with looking at a big crossbar that's hanging down below your vehicle.  Couple of big questions a lot of people ask is if this is going to work with all the different types of sub-models and the answer is, yes, regardless of your sub-model, the hitch will bolt up and work just fine.  And that kind of brings us to my next point.

Is it going to interfere with the hands-free lift gate assist feature And the answer is no.  As long as you kick your foot to either side of the receiver tube opening, the hatch will open up like it should.  Compared to the other hitch available, the Curt Hitch, they're gonna be very similar, especially in terms of appearance, where they're gonna sit in relation to the bottom of the vehicle and everything like that.  Firstly, I've always kind of liked the Curt finish a little bit more.  Just seems to be a little bit better, at least in my opinion.

And that Curt one does offer a little bit higher weight capacity too, so if that'll put your mind at ease a little bit more, definitely an option for you.  And then there's even a small, it's almost just a receiver tube.  It looks like some of these vehicles may come equipped factory with the smaller inch and a quarter hitch.  And in order to get the larger two inch opening, there's a little attachment that you can put on there as well.  So if your vehicle has that smaller hitch right from the factory, that's always a solution that you could use.

But with that said, this one is going to have that two inch by two inch receiver two opening, which is a good thing.  Super common size, a lot of stuff will work with it.  It is going to use that standard five eighths pin and clip.  Keep in mind it doesn't come included with the hitch.  If you need one, not a big deal, you can always grab it here at etrailer or a lot of times if you end up buying a new accessory, they'll come with one anyway.  So just something to look out for there.  The safety chain openings are gonna be a loop style and should provide you with enough room there to use just about any size hook that your trailer might have on it.  As far as the weight capacities go, this is gonna have a 300 pound maximum gross tongue weight rating, which that's gonna be the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch.  So that's a decent number.  You should be able to use one to three, maybe even four bike racks just depending on how heavy everything is.  Just to kind of give you an example there.  As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, that's gonna be 2000 pounds.  It's the amount of weight pulling on the hitch, that is the weight of your trailer plus anything you might have in or on it.  I do always like to recommend though, it's never a bad idea, just grab your ID4 owner's manual, that way you can check in there and make sure your vehicle can handle that much weight safely.  We'll grab a couple measurements now and these will help you figure out what type of accessories will work best.  You go from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening.  It's gonna be about 13 and a half inches.  So if your accessory has a straight shank, you should probably be all right.  If you've got one that has a rise in the shank, even better, buy a little more ground clearance back here.  And if you need a ball mount to pull a trailer around, I'd say probably one in that two to four inch range as far as a rise goes would work for most situations.  We go from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper.  That's only gonna be about an inch, which is really good.  So it shouldn't run into any issues here but if need be, you can use that to help figure out exactly if any of those folding style accessories you might have can be stored in that upright p
