It took me a while to understand this solo that seems just “free/open”. I gave my transcription to John Riley who, after studying it for about a week… realized that Alan actually structured his solo into 4 very distinct choruses, over the 32 bars form of the song Oleo. At the end, he simply adds two “A”’s playing the original melody, to call the band back in. Pure mastery.
Alan Dawson is for me an underrated master drummer. Not only his playing is, to me, extremely rich and controlled, he was also a master teacher operating in Boston. Then, he was teaching many of my heroes and of my previous teachers: Tony Williams of course, but also Vinnie Colaiuta, Ralph Peterson, Terri Lyne Carrington, Bob Gullotti, etc.. He created many amazing exercices and methods, starting by the famous rudimental “ritual”. It’s for me very inspirational to study the “teacher’s teacher”, and the more I dig into his playing, the more I realize how truly genius he was… and of course how far away I am from his mastery!
