The Rice Stitch is also known as William and Mary Stitch or Crossed Corners Cross Stitch. This stitch has been used in many English samplers since the 16th century .  It was introduced to America in the 17th century and was used mainly in borders.  Stitch with one thread or one colour if you like, and  finish each Rice Stitch as you come to it.  When you stitch with two different threads or colours, you stitch all the base crosses with the heavier darker thread, and the top stitches with the thinner lighter thread. Enjoy!
