This is the first of a four-part story. In Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, a cheetah named Queen works hard to rear three cubs. Her own parents were killed by lions when she was a cub herself, and she was raised by humans. David Drummond, who reared her, tells her story, from adopting the orphaned Queen to releasing her back into the wild. One day, as David is teaching Queen how to hunt, she leaps up on the hood of his car, using it as an elevated lookout post to help her spot distant prey. Released back into the wild, Queen continues to leap on to the hoods of passing vehicles, augmenting her natural abilities, to develop a unique new hunting style. Even with this advantage, however, Queen and her cubs struggle to survive the challenge of hunger as prey becomes scarce in the dry season.
