Rivian R1S First Look Plus Quality Check

I went to the local
I went to the local Rivian Service Center here in Orlando today to see if they happened to have an R1S on the lot. They happened to have a couple, but only 1 R1S was accessible. I walked around the vehicle to get some impressions of its size and its comparison to the R1T.
As luck would have it, this Rivian R1S was parked right next to, and nearly perfectly in line with an R1T that was also configured the same way. Because of this, I was able to get a really good side by side feel for the difference in the size of the R1S vs the R1T.
From a size perspective, we already know there are some dimensional differences between the Rivian truck and SUV. But to see how those dimensions differ in person is a different experience than on paper. The shorter wheel base and overall length of the R1S SUV is clear to see, but you can also very easily see the height is the same between the truck and SUV.
Finally, while there, I took the time to walk around the R1S to get a feel for fit and finish, and quality of the assembly of the SUV. As you can see, there is a clear similarity to the Tesla Model Y in 2020 when it launched. Many of the same issues we have seen on the Tesla Model Y are here on the Rivian R1S including panel gaps, mismatched trim, alignment issues, paint defects, etc. These issues are cosmetic in nature and won't impact the drivability of the car, but the biggest issue I saw was the charge port door resting on the front bumper, which will rub the paint off over time.
Overall, it was really great to see the Rivian R1S in person, because it is as big as I had imagined. This SUV is sure to be extremely popular, even at the steep price of about $90,000. There are only 3 7 seat EV SUV's on the market today. The Tesla Model Y, which is the smallest, the Tesla Model X, which is the most expensive, and then this Rivian R1S, which is the largest.
After renting a Rivian R1T for the weekend, I was encouraged and more excited to take delivery of our Rivian R1S soon. I have no idea how much longer we will have to wait to get one, but I am sure we will still be waiting for some time to get our hands on one.
