(1 Feb 1978) Somali President Siad Barre said wednesday (1/2) that the Soviet Union is using the Horn of Africa as a "window" into the area. Barre said that after 18 years of friendship with the Soviets, Somali no longer sees eye to eye with their former allies. He also warned other African countries not to believe everything the Soviets said, calling them "the new colonialists". Somali sources reported Thursday (2/2) that Ethiopia had launched concerted air attacks against Somali forces, signalling a major counter offensive in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia. Somalia also accused Cubans of piloting some of the Soviet Mig-21 and Mig-23 jets which give Ethiopia complete superiority in the air.
President Barre, speaking in an exclusive interview with a UPITN reporter in Mogadishu, was asked if he thought there was a danger of the Ethiopian conflict spreading
