One of the best ways to expand your knowledge of not only the neck of your guitar, but of your understanding of musical styles as well, is to explore scales and patterns you may be used to playing one way and applying those same scales and patterns another way. This pentatonic scale exercise uses a scale you may already be familiar with playing, but it is applied in such a way rhythmically that it takes on a jazzy bebop feel that actually gives the scale another personality, making it a useful way to expand what you can do with a this pentatonic A minor scale. After an explanation of the logic behind this scale, David then explores some rhythmic variations that will allow you to create some fascinating bebop phrases you can then take to other keys and play using the same principle. David breaks down the lick for you using his unique left note.right note system, which helps you visualize the structure of the pattern you’ll be playing, then he shows you how to apply a distinct rhythm pattern to the scale for the lick he creates. The lick is fairly simple, but played at different speeds, it can take on entirely different musical personalities. This is a good starting lick and a relatively simple rhythmic pattern you can play around with, By changing the structure of the lick rhythmically, you can create many different licks using the same note pattern, and by stringing them together creatively, you’ll find it’s easy to create bebop scale patterns using this pentatonic scale exercise. Give it a look and add a little bebop to your playing. It’s a refreshing and useful way to look at something you encounter almost every time you pick up your guitar. If it’s not, it should be.
