In a sharp criticism of China over border tensions with India, the US on Wednesday described Beijing's actions as "disturbing behavior" and said the skirmishes were a reminder of the threat China posed as it sought to use its power, whether in the South China Sea or on the borders with India.
Several Indian and Chinese troops sustained injuries after they engaged in a fist-fight in the Naku La sector of North Sikkim on Saturday. The incident happened after a face-off, but the matter was resolved soon.
Outgoing US Secretary for South and Central Asia Alice Wells on Wednesday said that border disputes of China—be it in Ladakh or the South China Sea—are a “reminder of the threat by China”. The strong statement by Wells came days after several instances of Chinese incursions by land and air, one of which led to a face-off between Indian and Chinese troops. After the clash, security agencies are now apprehensive about the large presence of Chinese personnel and vehicles at Demchok sector of Ladakh region, which was normally used only for patrolling purposes. According to officials, close to 1,000 heavy vehicles were seen across Demchok along with the presence of about 5,000 Chinese personnel including troops from the PLA.
India and China are on the brink of a military conflict as they compete for geopolitical influence.
The Indian Army assesses that the stand-off in Ladakh over Beijing's refusal to withdraw a platoon that has set up camp 10 kilometres inside Indian territory in the Depsang Valley could continue for weeks.
Indian Army chief General MM Naravane commented on the recent face-off with Chinese forces. Indian and Chinese soldiers were involved in scuffles in Ladakh and Sikkim. On May 9, 150 soldiers were involved in a physical clash at Naku La. Four Indian & seven Chinese soldiers were injured in the altercation. Another clash took place in Ladakh last week, near Pangong Lake. General Naravane said that the differences in perception of LAC are the cause.
