2017 Community Health Champion: Local Food Focus for one Kansas Community

Douglas County, KS received the Community Health Champion award at the 2017 Kansas State of Wellness Symposium. Douglas County has utilized their Food Policy Council to create a thriving local food system. The County has worked hard to recruit diverse partners including producers, consumers, hunger organizations, local government, non-profits, and private sector organizations to solicit feedback. The have also enhanced the food system by developing a food hub, SNAP Double-Up program at farmers’ markets, community gardens, and many other innovative partnerships. Through their engagement and partnership building efforts, they have cultivated a community culture that is supportive of healthy, locally grown foods.

The Kansas Alliance for Wellness is a statewide network of communities, organizations and individuals that are committed to improving the health of Kansans by creating healthy food and beverage environments. This project began in July 2013, and is led by the American Heart Association.
