At Friday’s Spring Quarter graduation ceremony, more than 300 NPS students will be recognized not just for their academic achievements, but also for diverse and innovative research efforts meant to address important issues encountered by the fleet and joint force.

NPS Defense Analysis graduates U.S. Army Majs. Eric Czaja and Ian McAlpine chose to address climate change – more specifically, carbon sequestration, which is cited in the Army Climate Strategy and its implementation plan as a key land management consideration at Army installations.

In their pioneering thesis, Czaja and McAlpine focused on regenerative agriculture, a land management approach with the potential to mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. Their solution was regenerative grazing by livestock – grazing cows. The soldiers’ research showed that regenerative grazing, if implemented at applicable installations, could “sink” (absorb) as much as 1.3 million tons of carbon.

“We chose to focus on adaptive multipaddock grazing, which is just using biomimicry to emulate the herds of bison and elk who once managed these lands, from the East Coast to the West Coast,” said Czaja, who was honored by the Association of the U.S. Army as NPS’ top Army student.

“It’s a nature-based solution that's going to increase warfighter proficiency, installation resiliency, and bring strategic value,” added McAlpine, himself selected for the Pat Tillman Award for Excellence in the Study of Irregular Warfare. “It gives our installation commanders an idea of how they can use nature-based solutions and also manage the land more effectively. That also hopefully brings about positive environmental effects as well.”

Join Czaja, McAlpine and their fellow graduates as they celebrate the completion of their NPS studies during the Spring Quarter graduation ceremony on Friday, June 21 at 10 a.m. Pacific (1 p.m. Eastern). Vice Adm. Kelly Aeschbach, commander of Naval Information Forces (NAVIFOR), will be the commencement speaker.
