On today's shootout I'll be comparing the 'hot' 1980's-1990's Toaster pickups to the 'scatter-wound' low output Toasters. Rickenbacker reintroduced the toaster pickup in 1985 after using 'hi-gain' pickups, but they made the new toasters very loud and hot. The scatterwound toasters are like the vintage ones- low output, and hand fed into the winding machine.

Talking 0:00-2:27
Bridge Pickup 2:27-4:45
Middle Position 4:46-7:14
Neck Pickup 7:15-8:46
Bridge with KTR Overdrive 8:47-9:30

I'm using my 1999 Rickenbacker 360/12v64, which came stock with Hot Toasters. They brought back the scatterwound pickups in 2000-2001 when they started making the c63 model, among other vintage reissues.

I made a bit of a goof in the intro saying that the hot toasters are twice the volume of vintage. They are twice the amount of resistance, but in actuality not double the loudness

My DC Resistance readings are as follows-
Scatterwound Neck: 7.03Ω
Scatterwound Bridge: 6.94Ω
Hot Toaster Neck: 11.16-11.17Ω
Hot Toaster Bridge: 10.76Ω

My amp is a 1974 (pre-master volume) Fender Silverface Pro Reverb with two 12" Weber 12F150 speakers. Mic'd with a Shure SM57

And I'm using my Klon KTR overdive pedal at the end

I recommend using headphones to hear the difference

Please subscribe- and let me know which pickup you prefer!
