Siloxanes in landfill gas harvested for energy generation must be scrubbed out because they pose serious risks to engines when combusted. Univ. of Michigan engineering researchers led the first-ever study of siloxane combustion chemistry to help find a solution: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.combustflam...

Siloxanes are a family of chemicals used more and more in everyday products, such as cosmetics, plastics, and some low-cal foods. They  are considered environmentally benign, but their presence in fuel can cause problems for engines because they convert to silica, or sand, once combusted.

The concentration of siloxanes present in the biogas harvested from landfills and wastewater treatment facilities is growing, and could begin to increase exponentially. Currently, the industry scrubs siloxanes out of biogas, which makes the product more expensive. In order for biogas to be a cost-effective renewable resource and alternative to coal, natural gas and crude oil, it is necessary to understand how siloxanes affect biogas combustion to find a way to account for them within an engine, and potentially even take advantage of their unique combustion properties.

This research was led by Margaret Wooldridge, an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of mechanical engineering, and Rachel Schwind, a mechanical engineering PhD candidate.

Their study was published in Combustion and Flame and is titled, "Effects of organic silicon compounds on syngas autoignition behavior."
