July 31, 2014--To raise awareness about a bill on the Governor’s desk to ban the dumping of toxic frack waste in New Jersey, concerned citizens  hired a plane to tow a banner today over the governor’s latest Jersey Shore town hall meeting in Belmar, NJ.

The banner reads: “DONT DUMP FRACK WASTE IN NJ’S WATER CALL GOV CHRISTIE 609-292-6000”. The bill (S1041) passed the legislature in June with overwhelming bi-partisan support (half the Republicans, all the Democrats).

The governor needs to sign the bill to protect our waterways given toxic fracking waste has already been dumped in New Jersey from Pennsylvania and the potential is great for more such dumping from there as well as from here in New Jersey, New York and the Delaware River Watershed.

New Jersey’s non-partisan legislative arm, the Office of Legislative Services, and other legal scholars have also found the bill to be constitutional as it doesn’t discriminate between in-state and out of state waste.

The plane was paid for with donations from individual and group members of the Coalition to Ban Frack Water Dumping in New Jersey’s Waters including but not limited to Clean Water Action, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Environment New Jersey, Food & Water Watch, and the Sierra Club.
