India thrives on one beverage! And that is TEA. Let us explore how tea affects our teeth, and oral hygiene.

I am often asked this question, whether tea is good or bad for teeth. Well, the answer is : BOTH! It depends on what kind of teeth you drink.

Green Tea is great for overall health and it also reduces the bacterial load in your mouth, thus reducing dental cavities. It also is great to treat bad breath and gum diseases.

However, most of us consume the cutting chai / masala chai more than the green tea. Tea in itself contains flavonoids which are great antioxidants which again are amazing for teeth and oral health. Tea is rich in Fluoride. Fluoride is the mineral which strengthens the enamel of teeth, making them stronger and less prone to cavities. However, the problem starts when you add milk and sugar to the tea.

Adding milk to your tea will reduce the good properties by almost half. The combination of milk and sugar is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. It is best to avoid both milk and sugar from your daily tea.

So I recommend drinking black tea over tea with milk and/or sugar. For those who still prefer the milk tea, should rinse their mouth immediately after. If you are in a meeting or traveling, it is recommended to drink a glass full of water after the tea.

Hope these tips were useful, and you learnt something new.
