Check out the comprehensive playlists for all three techniques in the links below. Ashes can significantly increase the grip for hand drilling. I demonstrate this with a Horseweed Spindle on a highly worn Honey Locust fireboard, using Loblolly Pine Needles for the Bird's Nest.
Next, I saturate a piece of cotton t-shirt with wood ashes and ignite it with an empty BIC lighter. My initial plan was to let it smolder for a while to demonstrate the coal-extending properties of ashed tinder, but then the wind forced me to go ahead and fire up the Pine Needles tinder bundle.
Finally, I extracte some Yucca Fibers, let them dry in the sun and wind for about 10 minutes, and then effortlessly created an ember by fire rolling in just 30 passes. The intense heat from the fire roll easily ignited more another Pine Needles tinder bundle.
