Before the normal description, I would like to say that the fuller version of this video included the 1971, 1990 Last night of the Proms recordings, but when those were included, the video received a worldwide block, the entire globe, I don’t know what BBC is up to, being fine with people using the 85, 89, 91, 09, and 12, proms recordings but not these. I don't get it really at all.

'Rule Britannia' is a patriotic song that has held significant cultural and historical importance in Britain for centuries. From 1740 to today showcases various interpretations and adaptations that reflect changing times and attitudes.

"Rule Britannia" was originally composed by Thomas Arne in 1740 as part of the masque or musical entertainment called "Alfred." The lyrics were penned by James Thomson. The composition celebrated Britain's naval power and its status as a dominant global empire during the 18th century. The song's rousing chorus, 'Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves,' encapsulated the sentiment of British naval supremacy.

Throughout the 19th century, 'Rule Britannia' continued to resonate with the British public, becoming a sort of unofficial national anthem. The song embodied notions of patriotism, British identity, and pride in the empire. It was commonly performed during public events, military ceremonies, and patriotic gatherings.

In the early 20th century, "Rule Britannia" remained popular, but its association with British imperialism and colonialism led to some criticism. As Britain's empire began to decline, the song's triumphalist tone faced scrutiny, particularly in light of changing global dynamics and calls for decolonisation. However, it continued to be performed in traditional contexts, emphasising historical significance rather than current political implications.

In recent times, "Rule Britannia" has become a subject of debate and controversy. In 2019, the BBC faced criticism for removing the lyrics from its Proms concert, a long-standing tradition where the song was traditionally performed. The BBC later reversed its decision not to have Rule, Britannia! and also 'Land of Hope and Glory' following fierce criticism by reports that the lyrics were being dropped due to associations with colonialism.

However, 'Rule Britannia' remains a part of British cultural heritage. It is still performed at various events, such as the Last Night of the Proms, albeit sometimes with altered or omitted lyrics to accommodate evolving sensibilities. The song has also been reimagined by contemporary artists, who have infused it with new arrangements or blended it with other musical genres to give it a modern twist.

Today, "Rule Britannia" serves as a reminder of Britain's complex history, reflecting both its achievements and its challenges. It continues to evoke a sense of national pride for some, while others view it through a critical lens. The song's evolution reflects the ongoing dialogue surrounding national identity, historical interpretation, and the changing dynamics of a multicultural society.
