Each month The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation hosts a Meet the Scientist Webinar featuring a researcher discussing the latest findings related to mental illness. In September, 2018, the Foundation featured Dr. Dorothy K.Y. Sit of Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

Description: Despite advances in the development of drug treatments for bipolar disorders (BD), effective treatments for depressed patients with BD remain limited. In this webinar, Dr. Sit will provide some history and background on bright light therapy for mood disorders and will present results from her clinical study on the efficacy of adjunctive bright light therapy at midday for bipolar depression. A key takeaway from her research was that after 4-6 weeks, 68.2% of patients who were treated with bright white light experienced full remission compared to only 22.2% of the patients assigned to the placebo unit. Dr. Sit will highlight other important findings and discuss possible directions for future research.
