Travel Vlog #88 | El Chaltén, Patagonia, Argentina
For our last few days in Patagonia, we were in El Chaltén hiking to Laguna de los Tres as well as exploring the town! Hiking to Laguna de los Tres is easily the most popular thing to do in El Chaltén, & for good reason. This hike is difficult, but not impossible for casual hikers. You hike through many different kids of landscapes before arriving at the lake (Laguna de los Tres) at the base of Fitz Roy - truly an otherworldly landscape.
To start the hike, we headed back up the northern 'highway' or access road, that we took the day before to Lago del Desierto. We started the hike at El Pilar, a hotel hiding a hiking start behind the building. You could easily start the hike from the town of El Chaltén, which is more traditional, but we were able to cut off a few miles of trekking by starting at this hotel, as well as get a vantage point of Mirador Piedras Blancas. Hiking through forests, plains, and straight up a slippery, rocky hill gives this hike some great diversity as well as challenge. The 8-10 miles (for me, 45,000 steps) is easily worth the views once at Laguna de los Tres. Being so close to Fitz Roy as well as the Cerro Torre peak is quite the experience, which isn't attainable without this hike.
This is a full day hike, so once we got back to El Chaltén we had some dinner and headed to bed. For our last day in El Chaltén,  we walked the entire town, and were really able to experience the spirit of Patagonia. You can stand in the middle of town and see both ends at the same time, as well as the entire main street. Each shop and restaurant has a unique look to it, since almost every building was built in the last 20 years and is a reflection of the person who opened it. We tried a few different restaurants and a couple shops, but really just walking the streets is the full experience.
We flew back to El Calafate to get to our last Argentinian adventure, and the time we had in El Chaltén will always remain in my mind.

As Argentina reopens for tourism, I've been posting my travels from Patagonia, one of the most untouched places I've ever been. El Chaltén is somewhere in Argentine Patagonia that I consider a must-see, & is also known as the trekking capital.
