Are you always running late? Doing things at the last minute? We can help, Socratica Friends! The tool you need is a PLANNER. But just owning a planner isn’t enough. Let’s talk about how to actually USE this magic little book to make your life so much easier.

We do use Google calendar for communicating deadlines & meetings here at Socratica. But when it comes time to actually PLAN, we use a good old-fashioned paper planner. There’s something about writing in a physical planner that helps us make sense of how to manage our time. Every year we buy an Academic Year planner from Moleskine: https://amzn.to/3qqHORI

The design of this planner works for us - on the left side is one week, with lots of room to write in each day. On the opposite side is a blank page, which is perfect for to-do lists.

You may actually find it more helpful for time management to see a whole month at a time. In that case, one of these giant desk blotter calendars might work for you: https://amzn.to/3ocwbvy

You start by writing all the important due dates in your planner. But that’s not enough! To make your planner really work for you, you need to...COUNT BACKWARDS.

Count back the number of days you will need to do your work, & then write in milestones you need to hit. For instance, if you’re writing a paper, you write when it’s due, & then when you’ll finish your final draft, when you’ll finish your rough draft, when you’ll finish your research…

Same for preparing for a test. Write the date of the test, & then count back how many days you’ll need to study for the test. Include times to take practice tests. This way you’ll never have to cram for a test again!

For this technique to work, you’ll need to have a good idea about how long each task takes. The POMODORO TECHNIQUE is perfect for this. You break your work into 20-25 minute chunks, & then you keep track of how many pomodoros it takes for you to do a typical task. We have a video all about this excellent study/ time management technique:

We start this video with the basics, but you can also jump ahead to the section with Advanced Techniques for when you have a REALLY crammed schedule (like you are a full-time student & you have a job as well). Here are the important timestamps in the video:
