In this video you will see the actual areas used for the Will Smith movie. I was able to find four unlisted locations but only recorded footage of two of them.

The Hive (Secondary Exterior) - 513/515 26th Street

The Apartment - City Sweep (Exterior) - Beach St & Greenwich St
Robert & Sam walking down the street - 109 Mercer St

All Zombie or Zombie-like movies have their metaphors. What I take away from this story is pretty simple. The virus represents evil and those infected by it can only exist in darkness, hence Dark Seekers. Dr. Neville is on one man mission to cure it. Though very difficult, he ultimately succeeds. That's basically it. My basis is further reinforced by the multiple Bob Marley references that occur throughout the film. I don't like to read too much into it because you can end up defeating the purpose of the intended entertainment. As you watch the moral of the story will become clear.
