In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Savitribai Phule, an Indian social reformer, educationalist from Maharashtra. She was born on 3 January 1831 in the village of Naigaon in Satara District, Maharashtra.
She is regarded as the first female teacher of India. She and her husband
Jyotirao Phule played an important and vital role in improving women's rights in India. Also regarded as the mother of Indian feminism. Savitribai and her husband founded one of the first Indian girls' school in Pune, at Bhide wada in 1848. She worked to abolish the discrimination and unfair treatment of people based on caste and gender. And worked towards emancipation of widows. She is regarded as an important figure of the social reform movement in Maharashtra. A philanthropist and an educationist, Phule was also a prolific Marathi writer.
