This tutorial introduces one of the most common acoustic effects that saxophonists worldwide need to master if they are to succeed in playing pop, rock, jazz or blues music. The growl effect is the equivalent of using a distortion pedal for electric guitar players.

Producing the growl effect on the saxophone is both simple, yet tricky until it is mastered. This tutorial takes the viewer through a range of simple preliminary exercises that sets the player up for success once the saxophone is added.

The tenor saxophone is used throughout the demonstrations however, the same concept applies to the entire saxophone family.

References are made throughout to famous saxophonists who made the growl a distinctive part of their signature sax sounds including Boots Randolph, Lenny Pickett, Dave Sanborn, Clarence Clemmons, Tom Scott and Bobby Keys.

The tutorial ends with a modern rock blues track where the saxophone naturally solos with a light growl throughout to match the style of music being played.
