FANUC America Authorized System Integrator Pearson Packaging Systems is an industry leader in the design, build, integration and service of secondary packaging automation solutions. The system seen here was custom designed by Pearson to erect, pack, seal and palletize cases of laundry scent booster bottles.

Starting at the case erector, Pearson’s CE50 erects cases with a Rockwell Automation servo arm for both speed and flexibility. Hot melt is applied to the minor flaps, and a servo-driven mandrel compresses case flaps to ensure the corrugate seals. Erected boxes continue down a conveyor to the pack station, where timing screws group products for diverting into pack patterns. The diverter splits product into desired pack patterns, and the product is transported via continuous motion conveying to four FANUC LR mate 200iD/7L robots for packing. Packing the products in this way optimizes efficiency.

The robot’s custom end of arm tooling uses articulated motion for increased reliability, and is able to grip products that are incompatible with vacuum picking. Additionally, the robots feature automatic tool change in order to accommodate various pack patterns.

Full cases are then weighed by a Mettler Toledo check weigher for quality control. A Pearson CS40 top seals cases with Nordson hot glue, and compensating belts stabilize each case for an efficient seal. Finally, the cases reach the palletizing stage where a FANUC M-410iC/185 palletizing robot uses bellows-style vacuum cups to ensure reliable pick and placement.
