Kinshasa is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Although the city's population in 2016 was 12,071,000, 60% of Kinshasa's territory is sparsely populated countryside, which, however, falls within the administrative boundaries of the city. The densely populated urban areas of Leopoldville occupy only a small part of the territory in the west of the province.
