One hundred years of American music, 1850-1950, featuring Aaron Jonah Lewis, banjo, and musical arrangements by student August Shoemaker. An evening of toe-tapping music, and a great way to cap off the ONU Homecoming weekend. Come Celebrate America with the ONU Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of alumnae Sarah Waters.

Alfred D. Cammeyer was born on St. Patrick's Day 1862 in Brooklyn USA.

Cammeyer was a true businessman from an early age. He originally learned to play the violin but rejected the instrument as he felt that it was limited in that chords and harmonies were not possible. He took up the banjo and also experimented with banjo construction until he found a design that produced a tone and touch that he found suitable to suit his style of playing.

In 1888 he travelled to London UK and brought his newly designed banjo with him. It is believed that his design was to become known as the zither-banjo. He was to live in England for the rest of his life.

He became a regular acquaintance of the English aristocracy and fascinated them with his banjo playing skill. As a member of BMG orchestras he entertained the elite at many high class functions and was a regular guest to the Mayfair mansions of the wealthy. One of his sponsors, Sir Arthur Sullivan was instrumental in convincing Cammeyer to compose his own music for the banjo. This led on to him producing hundreds of banjo compositions, many of them simply magical in their musical charm.

He was a regular contributor to banjo journals and taught banjo professionally, his star pupil being Bernard Sheaff, later without whom he refused to play on stage. Apparently their stage show not only consisted of exquisite banjo playing, but had more of a concert hall comedy act feel to it. Sheaf, who was tall and lanky and Cammeyer, who was short and fat, would enact a routine of never being satisfied with each other, the stage layout; moving chairs, lights, pianos even the flowers round the stage and all done while totally unsmiling and with never a word spoken between them! Then suddenly, and without a sign, Cammeyer would spring into life playing the most beautiful of music with Sheaff faultlessly accompanying him. Maybe they were the British banjo playing Laurel and Hardy?

In 1893 Cammeyer went into partnership with Clifford Essex to produce a range of 'Essex and Cammeyer' Zither banjos to Cammeyer's design. The instruments were originally out sourced to the likes of Weaver, Temlett and Windsor et al. but later manufactured in house in their own workshops. This partnership ended in 1900, but Cammeyer continued manufacturing instruments from the same workshops, now labeled as 'Cammeyer' banjos. Some of his finest instruments, such as the Vibrante and Vibrante Royal, are still in great demand today.

In 1939 Cammeyer retired to Derbyshire, UK to live in a house provided by another of his wealthy patrons, The Honorable Arthur Stutt. It was there that in 1949 Cammeyer died.

He left a great legacy of fine banjo compositions and arrangements. Most of his compositions are written in 'elevated bass' to D and many are simply charming pieces. It is a delight that they are now being played again and recorded for us by members of this site.
