It’s that time of year again—cold and flu season!

What is the difference between cold and flu?

Stuffy nose, sneezing, cough, headache—all the symptoms that could be caused by cold or flu. How can you tell them apart? Well, usually the flu symptoms are more severe. They might be associated with a high fever greater than 102 F, body aches, chills, nausea, vomiting, and you may not have gotten the flu shot this year.

If your symptoms are relatively mild—for instance, no fever greater than 102 F, no severe body aches, no chills, no diarrhea, no vomiting—you can certainly try some over the counter (OTC) treatments.

How can I treat my cold?

The first OTC treatment I’m going to mention is drinking plenty of fluids. When your body is sick, it uses a lot more water and you have a very high likelihood of becoming dehydrated. This is especially true if you have a fever. If you’re sick, the first thing you should be doing is drinking plenty of fluids.

Next we’re going to focus on the symptoms because the OTC treatment that you’re going to buy is going to depend on which symptom is bothering you the most.

For instance, if you have lots of aches and pain and low grade fever, you may benefit from acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) or ibuprofen (the active ingredient in Advil). If your main symptom is a cough, you’re going to want to take a medicine that has a cough suppressant like dextromethorphan. One example of this is Robitussin Cough. If your main symptom is a stuffy nose, some of the medicines that help with that are pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine. One example of this is Sudafed.

When should I contact my doctor about my cold?

Oftentimes you can try some OTC treatment for your cold or flu, however if the symptoms are lasting more than 7-10 days, if you’re having very high grade fever that is not improving with Tylenol or Advil, if you’re having any chest pain, any difficulty breathing or any severe symptoms like fainting, you should see a doctor right away.
