In a major setback for China, Lai Ching-te from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) elected new president of Taiwan. Lai Ching’s victory is a major upset for China, which had previously labeled Lai Ching-te as a 'serious threat' due to his pro-independence stance. Mr. Lai’s main opponent Hou Yu-ih from Nationalist Party conceded defeat. Taiwan’s Vice President Lai Ching-te emerges victorious in the three-way race involving Hou Yu-ih from the Beijing-friendly Kuomintang (KMT) party and Ko Wen-je from the emerging Taiwan People's Party (TPP).
