Bulletproof VANOS 5
Before you install the VANOS itself, its time to get your timing perfect.
We will begin this video by installing the Exhaust Cam Gear/Sprocket and following it with the Exhuast hub and spring retainer. Follow closely! Then comes the fun part in which you get to experiment with Helical gear into the hub. This is where the correct install is critical. You want to find the sweet spot in which the gear travels in and out of the hub in its full range of motion. This action of the helical gear is what effectively advances and retards the cam as you go through the RPM range. The optimal spot that the helical gear is installed will allow full travel. If you install it in the incorrect place, your timing will not advance or retard fully and leave you with an engine that doesnt perform at its peak. This is my persona favorite video as there are a lot of opinions on this step. We show you how to find the sweet spot so your engine is a runner! A side note, we marked on our old hubs and gears and found that even from factory, our VANOS wasn't optimally installed for max performance of the timing unit. Most instructions just insert the helical gear into whatever position it will slide in, sure it will run but this is not optimal. Unless you just get lucky, Youl probably find that your engine falls flat at higher RPM's. My car has been running for a while post this VANO's install, and i can confirm with my engine pulls all the way through 8000 RPMs.
Make sure to make your marks so that the helical gears can be installed in their sweet spot with the VANOS unit. See you next time for the VANOS install.
